Mehrauli... named after my dear friend Mihir from Gujarat... just joking; its Mihir Bhoja, king of Gurjara Dynasty. The place is full of architectural wonders. Seat of 'Lakh Baksh Sultan' who gave the world its tallest brick minaret, Qutb Minar, Mehrauli is one of the 7 ancient cities of Delhi.
As you drive past the Qutb, you are filled with awe as to how it has withstood the tests of time. Besides the ancient forts, minars and the graves, Qutb also has a distinct architectural creation which not many know about even in Delhi.
View of Qutb from a friend's terrace.
Adham Khan's tomb popularily known as Bhulbhulaiya or 'The Maze'
Churches all over the world have their own styles, but most of them look somewhat like the two examples below.
Christ Methodist Church, Butler Road, Delhi
Greek Orthodox Church, Amman.
St. John's Church Mehrauli was designed by Alfred Coore of the Brotherhood of Ascendant Church in 1928 who also designed the Holy Trinity Church, Turkman Gate, in the walled city of Delhi in 1906. The unique design borrows from a temple, mosque and church and needs to be seen to be believed.
The church has been service for all these years and the congregation has grown in number and faith.
Whenever I go to a new place, besides the famous, well written and most talked about things and places, I have realised that there are wonders waiting to be discovered and experienced. Take my advice - Walk, its also good for health.
Thank you. Im enjoying the pictures. Looks like simple pictures with a deep insight. So amazing and intersting.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, when i read your post, a natural feelings brought me to reflect something...
"there are wonders waiting to be discovered and experienced" It reminded me when I visited one old church and i've come along way when the caretaker at the door says; "you can't get in", initially, my intuition tells me that he just telling me this for the pleasure of saying "NO" but he says it again....that means, he is serious...yet still i never stopped instead carry on and sees if he truly prevents me to get inside the church. Thanks to my resistance because i have leaarned that it was only his rules. Sometimes we have to test boundaries to go after what we want. As long as this doesn’t push us beyond the frontier of our values then it’s a great exercise.
thanks also for the idea.....keep on writing...
