Reached Vellore around 28 hours after boarding the train. For most of us, Vellore is synonymous with Christian Medical College and VIT, but it was a surprise when we saw a fort in the heart of the city.
The fort was built in the late part of 16th century A.D by Sinna Bommi Nayak under the Vijayanagar kings. It changed hands to the Arcot throne, Bijapur, Marathas and the Delhi throne between the 17th and 19th centuries. A masterpiece of military architecture it has a glorious past and has a large but mostly unknown role in the fight for freedom.
The fall of the fort from the Delhi throne after the death of Tipu Sultan and the capture of his sons who were imprisoned in the fort in late 18th century. On the pretext of the marriage of Tipu's daughter on the 9th of July 1806, the patriotic soldiers gathered in the fort where she was imprisoned.
On the 10th of July 1806, the Vellore Mutiny took place and brutally suppressed by the British.
Here are some of the pictures of the fort.
