FIRANGI COFFEE, DESI PARATHA AND FILMY WEEKENDS

It may not serve you Cappuccino in fancy paper cups, but the morning breakfast of half fried eggs, with paratha (Indian bread shallow fried in indian clarified butter called ghee) and sweet tea with milk is better than the one served across the road in the more famous branded coffee shops. If this is your first visit, you would be awed by the presence of a man of indeterminate age, called by all as Chacha, who seems to be the hub around which the wheels of the restaurant run.

I was introduced to the restaurant by my boss who had been having his breakfast there off and on. People do not go to the restaurant just for the breakfast, be it simply bread with loads of butter and jam or a complicated thing as Nihari (Beef shanks cooked overnight with herbs and spices). It is the relationship that Chacha has developed with the people who visit the place, which attracts us. The present owner told me that Chacha has been there since the day of inauguration about thirty two years back.

The owner and Chacha with us.

It is amazing how he can remember each one of the regular customers and know what we like to eat. His words, interspersed with anecdotes, jokes and advices are always taken in a good spirit. In my so many visits to the place, I am yet to find a day when he has lost his temper or the zest to work. A lesson in interpersonal skills I guess. Most of us have used the common excuses of being cluttered, tired, worried, worked up, tense, pressurised etc for loosing our cool but here is a man who is just like the cup of tea he serves - always the same exciting and refreshing flavour. A man who would always be fondly remembered.

Another thing worth mentioning is our fascination with Indian Cinema. Every Thursday we religiously march into the mall and buy the tickets for any show after 1800 hours. In the recent past, we have sat through the unforgettable to the unforgivable. Without naming the films, I can tell you that there have been at least two instances where we have fought and blamed each other for making us sit through three hours of torture. But, on the other side there have been times when a movie has left an indelible mark on our minds and hearts. The following picture is self explanatory to Hindi Cinema buffs.

And finally a song from one of my favourite movies, Aandhi.
Boss you know why it is here.
