I still remember the days, when Doordarshan was the only television channel and we were so content with the weekly movie, Chitrahaar (the half an hour song programme) and Krishi Darshan, where the expert taught us how to mix the right amount of cow dung and urea to make the rose garden bloom better. The daily soaps were simple, Bibi Naatiyon Waali ( Old Lady with Grandchildren), Mungeri Lal Ke Haseen Sapne (The beautiful dreams of A Day Dreamer), and for suspense we had Karamchand, our version of Sherlock Holmes, the differences being a carrot instead of a pipe and Kitty in place of Dr. Watson.
Another thing that was shown too regularly besides the "Rukaawat ke liye khed hai" (sorry for the interruption message) was the public message on unity. It went something like this - Ek chidiya, ek ek karke anek chidiya. It was an animated story about birds and how staying alone got them caught but when they were united, they could fly away with the hunter's net. You would think how come I am reminded of these so long lost memories now, but that is how my team was built. In the beginning there was one chidiya (bird), and then another and then many of them from the same place joined the team. Having people related to each other working together is a tricky situation. If they click, it is a perfect situation, but if they can not see eye to eye, better stay out of the way ere you eye is injured in the melee.
We were a group of forty four people from different towns and cities from four countries. I say were because some have left the team and are busy working in other parts of the world. The Kingdom of Thailand, Ratcha Anachak Thai, is the home of two of the guys on the team. They are the most courteous and it was a pleasure to meet them for the first time with hands joined together and head bowed in the traditional way of greeting. Sa wat dee khap. One of them was a palm reader and became very popular for his near accurate analysis. He missed his home a lot, especially his daughter and decided to go back to be with the family. We all wish him well.
Nepal is derived from the word Nepa, referring to the Newar kingdom. Traditionally it is believed to be named after the sage Ne. It contributes to a large workforce here in gulf, not just in our company but also other sectors. It was a surprise to find a young boy from there, who had learnt Japanese language for two years besides being trained for the job he was doing. Timi lai kasto cha? ( How are you, in the Nepalese language.) Every time I ask him, he smiles reminding me of the chair I promised him but have not yet delivered even after nine months. These were men who were quiet and attentive, doing their work like clock work, without any reasons for me to ever question them.
So, that makes it two Thai and four Nepalese altogether. Young men with dreams to make it big in a land of opportunities.
The team appeared stumped by the Surprise questionnaire.
